James' E3 Predictions

First off, the safe bets...
  • Nintendo is quite likely to announce some sort of Virtual Console for the DSi. What will likely be surprising is what titles they first announce.
  • Nintendo will announce at least one big title for Wii and hopefully a release date. The most likely candidates are Pikmin 3, the next Mario or Zelda for Wii, or a new Kid Icarus or Metroid.

KS8's HUGE Compilation of E3 Predictions

This year, E3 is shaping up to be quite ambitious! After last year's disappointments with regards to Nintendo's strong gear towards the "casual" audience with the likes of Animal Crossing and Wii Music, there's ample reason to suggest that Nintendo will be focusing on the "core" masses this time around and that can only be good news!
Even Nintendo realized that their support towards E3 last year was quite lacking and they were even disappointed in themselves. With that in mind, there's lots to look forward to. Since E3 2008, so many fans have expressed their views on not only Nintendo's E3 appearance but also thoughts on Nintendo as a whole -- accusing them of focusing so much on the new audiences that they're ignoring their longtime fans (or at least, not supporting them as well as they should be.
Lots of rumors, insider information and announcement have surfaced since that point from January 2009 onwards (and even a few before that point). All things considered, there's a lot to look forward to this year which is why I decided to compile a big list of predictions for this coming year. These predictions will not only see fulfillment during E3 but some may surface shortly afterwards sometime this year.
Some of the predictions you're about to read are based on facts and solid information, some are based ondeeply-rooted fan hopes, and others are predictions ofmore "secretive" nature! All in all, you're getting a big mix! With only 9 days left till E3, I'm pleased to finally present to you my giant list of predictions!

Latest ESRB Ratings

This week we've seen some very interesting ESRB Ratings pop up. Here's a quick summary of some of the more interesting titles. One of the most notable is that of "Domino Rally" confirming that a North American localization of the Japanese title, "Go! Go! Go! Minon: Everyday Hero" is, indeed, still coming! This is great news for anyone who had hoped it would get localized.

Drill Sergeant Mindstrong has re-appeared for the second time possibly hinting that the game is coming this month since XSEED had slated the game for release last month. Sexy Poker has also turned up once again with a Mature rating for such questionable elements as Sexual Themes and Nudity. Oh boy. Will Gameloft actually go through with it? Will Nintendo allow them to do it? Time will tell but this author thinks they'll have to make it less questionable.

Cave Story and Mighty Flip Champs! also got rated by the ESRB this week. Both are of little surprise. Whilst Cave Story probably won't be heading to North America just yet, it's quite possibly that Mighty Flip Champs will come out before E3.

For more details on the latest ESRB Ratings, be sure to check out Wiiloveit.com!

Hudson focusing strongly on digital distribution this year

After having a quick look at some of the raw data from Hudson's financial report, it's clear that Hudson has some really ambitious plans for Wii and DS this year. Their financial report shows that they are planning on localizing 2 Wii titles and 1 DS title for NA, they are planning on a DS version of Deca Sports, and they are planning on 4 DSiWare titles and 6 WiiWare titles! They are also planning 5 DS and 5 Wii titles...

News: Metroid Prime: Trilogy announced!

E3 is just around the corner and Nintendo is already announcing an awesome first-party title for Wii owners to enjoy! In lieu of revealing Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2 as new additions to the New Play Control! series (as per the Japanese release), Nintendo has announced a new collaborative project with Retro Studios that will see revamped versions of the original Metroid Prime releases on the Gamecube in addition to the existing Metroid Prime 3: Corruption all on one premium disk! Nintendo assures us that a lot of care has gone into making this game and will definitely appeal to "longtime fans" of the Metroid Prime franchise. The game will retail for an MSRP of $49.99 on August 24th.

Adventure Island The Beginning Review

Overall, Hudson haven't really done a great job on here. It will probably keep fans of the original happy, but it feels like corners have been cut and a lack of quality control has gone on here, leaving us with a game that's average at best. At it's heart, it's just another generic platformer with flaws throughout and a few extra features that have been slapped on to make the package seem more worthwhile. Instead, we've recieved what is probably the biggest let-down on WiiWare from Hudson so far. Come on, guys - we know you can do better than this!

Billy's Blog: Busy, Busy Me...

Hey there guys, just thought I'd let you know why there haven't been that many posts from me recently. The reason, is that at the moment I'm trying to revise for my BIG exams, whilst trying to balance playing through games to A) not overload myself with stress and B) to prepare for a review for you guys (apart from when I'm playing PC games - that's just for the stress :D )

Because of this though, you may have noticed that I haven't been uploading many new things to the 'site, and I apologise for this. When I have gaps in my timetables and whatnot that I can spend working on the 'site, I will do my best to do so. My next such gap is tomorrow evening, incidentally, and although I can see myself using that time for myself, I'll do my best to work on the website, or at least on my free day on Wednesday :D

Once again, massive apologies, in particular to Hudson soft (who's Adventure Island review is still yet to come), KnucklesSonic8 (who I barely get a chance to talk to without ending asking him to do more things for the 'site - and who's Super Paper Mario review needs to be finalised and uploaded) and our new team member Murat (who's Red Steel review - his first review for Wiiloveit - still needs to be posted online).

I'd also like to apologise to you guys, who haven't had too much to read recently, but I assure you that everything and everyone is still busy here, and we will have a few special features and some more reviews on their way in the next few weeks and months. Here's a hint at what we'll be giving you: *fingers conveniently drop off, providing a great excuse for Billy to stop talking and not reveal anything*

Minor Annoyance of Wii Games - Part One: Boxed Windows

Welcome to my new series of blogs taking a glance at the little things that really annoy me when it comes to gaming on the Wii. I'm going to try and update the blog every day this week with either one of these features, or... something else.

When I turn on a Wii game on my small but snazzy HD telly, I revel in knowing that many others using the standard AV cable that came inside the original box are stuck with an inferior, fuzzier picture to mine. Okay, maybe I'm not that harsh, but I still like knowing that I'm getting the full experience on the Wii, rather than being stuck with older technology all the time, like my epically slow mobile phone, or my first generation iPod nano.

Maybe I'm being a bit stuck-up, but I love to have new things, even though I'm not always able to get them. And when I do get them, it's not because I'm rich (which I'm not), but because I've either saved up for a while, or got them in a special offer :) Anyways, I digress...

When I do insert the game in the slot of my Wii, and start it up, one thing I always look for on the "Wii remote safety screen" is whether or not the screen fills all the space on my television. It might sound a bit daft, but if the screen is not ENTIRELY filled with video, I fell slightly cheated, and distracted by the borders that surround the screen.

WiiWare | XGen Studios | Action / strategy | 1-4 Players (local co-op) | 500 Nintendo Points | Out Now
Control: Wii remote
Reviewer: James Fluker

Defend Your Castle started out as a free online flash game, where the aim was to pick up stick figure people and drop them from a high enough altitude to their doom in order to protect your castle. After a certain amount of time, the level would end giving the player the chance to save and upgrade your defence before continuing on. Each level ramps up the difficulty, eventually unleashing harder enemies and weapons on you, such as catapults and giants.

This is where the game's strength lies: as there are more and increasingly tougher enemies on screen, it is necessary to start to develop strategies on how to best survive, such as saving spells for giants or making sure you aren't swarmed by blowing up crowds. As you'd play, the game would constantly pump out new stages until the player calls it quits, and if you fail, you were given the opportunity to restart from the stage.

Daily Nintendo Favourite: Baby laughing at the Wii

"Our ten month old, Theo, cracks up watching his dad play golf on the Nintendo Wii."

Tomorrow is Saturday, so look out for three new favourites!

Thursday 7 May 2009

Favourite: MARIO KART (REMI GAILLARD)

"Dangerously funny videos created and produced by Rémi GAILLARD."

Another favourite tomorrow!

ESRB Ratings: Swords & Soldiers

Lookie what got rated by the ESRB today: Swords & soldiers. A while back, the developers said the game would be coming "very, very soon" and just by the fact that the ESRB has rated it is a good indicator that the game has a high chance of appearing this month, and even in the next update this coming Monday. The game has been rated E10+ for Cartoon Violence and Mild Suggestive Themes. Here's what the summary has to say...

OFLC rates Super Mario Kart and Pilotwings

OFLC has recently rated Super Mario Kart and Pilotwings, confirming that they are, indeed, coming to the Virtual Console. This is especially big news since the 300th VC Game is coming very soon and as such, Nintendo could be planning something big to commemorate such a momentous feat! Could these two titles be fair game for a nationwide release on the VC? Time will tell!

Little King's Story originally intended to be a veggie-based game

When asked where the inspiration for Little King's Story came from in a recent interview, the developer for the game had this to say:
  • "Lets make a game to rival Animal March!...

Grand Slam Tennis due to be a timed Wii exclusive

Portion of an interview with Peter Moore confirms that grand Slam Tennis will be adapted for the PS3 and Xbox 360 platforms at a later time. His direction regarding this is made clear in a recent interview with Kikizo:
  • "Well, let me be clear, we've announced Grand Slam Tennis on the Wii, June of this year, and later this year - I don't think we've got a specific date yet - it will be shipping on the Xbox 360 and the PS3. We decided to lead on the Wii because we needed to lead, and we knew Wii MotionPlus is coming; we thought this is a great opportunity, that the planets were aligning - what better game than tennis to show off MotionPlus - Nintendo agreed, and we have the ability to bundle."

EA reveals new IP in Japan

"Shonen Kininden Tsumuji" is the name of a new DS game that's being shown off by EA over on the Western part of the world. The game features a young ninja named Tsumuji who needs to save his family from a "mysertious group of ninjas" who have attacked his village. The game has you exploring dungeons, throwing shurikens, searching for secret areas, defeating foes using the stylus, and more.

High Voltage Software has no plans for DSi, more WiiWare in the works

When asked what their approach is towards DSi and the DSiWare service, High Voltage Software replied this way:
  • "We currently don't have any plans in the works for DSiWare, but you never know what system will make the most sense to develop for in the future."
When asked about the WiiWare service and how things have been faring up until now, they had this to add...

Mighty Flip Champs sequel possible, Shantae being considered

When asked in a recent interview about whether or not Wayforward would consider having additional levels in the form of DLC for Mighty Flip Champs, they responded by saying:
  • "We could, but I think we'd rather do a sequel. It's nice to get a whole new package with new ideas."
Then, this was added:
  • "More levels are all well and good, but it's also "more of the same". With a service as open as DSi is, we could keep pushing the series rather than just adding on top of it. Flip Champs will be worth your cash on its own, but if we've got the time, cash, and fan support to devote more time to it, I'm with Matt on this one. We've already got some great ideas for a sequel..."

Furry Legends nearly finished, user creation and multiplayer considered

Taken from a recent interview on N-Europe, this quote confirms that development of Furry Legends is well under way and they are close to putting on the final touches within the next month or so.
  • "What I can tell you is that I want Furry Legends to cost the right amount of money for the content we'll be providing. Depending on the amount of content in the game, the price may vary. As for the release date, this is again something that is being set by the big N. Internally, we're aiming to end the development cycle around end of June 2009, which would put game going Live between 3rd and 4th quarter of this year.

PEGI Ratings: Gameloft DSiWare titles, new WiiWare title

The following games have recently been rated by the PEGI Board. We get a re-confirmation of Brain Challenge for the DSiWare, we learn that Pop Superstar: Road to Celebrity is close to being finalized and we learn of a new WiiWare game entitled...

Highlights from Ubisoft's Fiscal Report

Time to analyze Ubisoft's fiscal report! It's not as lengthy as say, Konami's, but it still has some good details contained within it.
  • "A continued very strong showing for games for Wii, including Rayman Raving Rabbids® TV Party and Shaun White Snowboarding: Road Trip, combined with the successful launch of My Fitness Coach."
Couple of keys here: First, they consider My fitness Coach to be a success, so obviously the game is selling well, particularly in the EU regions I imagine. Secondly, they acknowledge that RRR TV Party and Shaun White Snowboarding did very well as a whole and they are impressed with the sales numbers for both. After the press release was issued, over on GamesAustra, it was commented that Ubisoft is planning more Shaun White in the near future so that's something to look forward to as well.

  • "In addition to strengthening our existing franchises - particularly Far Cry and Rayman Raving Rabbids, whose sales were up by more than 50% on their previous performances - we successfully launched two new million-unit-selling brands with Shaun White and Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X, confirming our entry into the sports segment and bolstering our position in the air combat segment."

New tidbits about Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games

A couple of new details can be found in a recent hands-on that The Sonic Stadium had not too long ago.
  • "Apparently many players didn’t get as far as unlocking all of the Dream Events which is a scenario Sega wish to avoid this time round. Speaking of Dream Events Sega have been working closely with Nintendo and have been granted much more freedom with them meaning more items will appear from Sonic and Mario’s world to be used in whatever bizarre races they have planned this time."
So it seems that they've acknowledged that some didn't stick with the original long enough to even unlock the Dream Events (lack of interest/motivation?) so to avoid that, they'll probably have them unlocked early on.
  • "During certain races you’re given the ability to ‘boost’ by tapping the A button on the Wii Remote. The animation is different for each character but is usually a throwback to the past. Sonic for example does a spindash while Tails lifts a few feet from the air and propels himself forwards with his twin tails. Mario on the other hand has a spinning move as last seen in Mario Galaxy and Luigi appears to shoot himself forwards out of an imaginary cannon as seen in Smash Bros. As well as looking good tactical boosting could shave a good few seconds off your time."
Well, that's cool. It sounds like they're incorporating animations for special attacks in the same vein as SEGA Superstars Tennis.

ESRB Ratings: Overturn!

Overturn has just been rated by the ESRB confirming that it is, indeed, getting localized for North America! It's already been confirmed for EU but things were in limbo as to whether or not it would, indeed, come to NA but it looks like it is after all! This is great news! The game's been rated E10+ for Fantasy Violence. Here's the ESRB Summary...

SouthPeak Games announces Sled Shred

Slated for a Fall 2009 release, Sled Shred is a "unique racing experience" that involves racing down steep inclines in toboggans, tubes, bobsleds, traditional sleds and more. The game will feature a modest number of courses, and will utilize the Wii Balance Board for full body interaction.

Iwata acknowledges the lack of first-party titles

In a recent conference, Iwata made this statement:
  • “As for our deployment during the latter half of this year, I would like to announce on the other day as it is not today’s main topic. I would like to address that Nintendo recognize that we have been short of new proposals during the former half of this year, so far.”

Nintendo Power promises surprises for Wii in next issue

The writers of NP seem to be hinting at some surprises for Wii that they plan to reveal in their next issue. Here's a quote from their current issue:
  • "No teases or sly hints about next month’s cover game, because we know how long many of you have been waiting for our big story on...

Harvest Moon: Ranch Store's first DLC pack

Harvest Moon: Ranch Store has already released in Japan and it's already getting its first pack of downloadable content. Marvelous has plans to issue more DLC packs on a monthly basis for 500 Wii Points each.

Analyst lists top 20 upcoming titles for Wii

A study was done recently which examined a series of upcoming titles for Wii and based on the current Wii audience, a level of purchase intent was calculated. Here were their Top 20 predictions for the upcoming year/2nd and 3rd quarter (based on what titles we know so far)...

Saturday Favourite: Youtube Street Fighter

"A Youtube video game in wich you can control your character by clicking one of the 4 buttons..."

The second of todays Saturday favourites. One more to go in a few hours...

News - Prince declined Activision's Guitar Hero offer

Apparently, Activision spoke with Prince at some point regarding Guitar Hero and they made him an offer in hopes of licensing his song maybe in a future game or as part of a downloadable pack. In any case, Prince declined their offer, and the reasons as to why is no less interesting. The reason behind his declining their offer has more to do with how he feels about the franchise as a whole than anything else.

News - Major Minor's Majestic March only sells 600 copies in Japan

Rough numbers suggest that Major Minor only sold an abysmal total of 600 copies in Japan during its first week! That's absolutely terrible. This was despite the fact that they had a special promotion running in Japan that had animated shorts based on the game air for a week.

News - Capcom has secret titles lined up for E3

We've known for quite some time now that Capcom is one of the developers for Wii that currently have secret projects in the works and according to their Twitter profile, two of these projects will be surfacing at E3!

Another Code R confirmed for EU release!

A (terrible) placeholder boxart has been recently issued further confirming that Another Code R will, indeed, be hitting Europe this year. The first confirmation of this was in Nintendo's last lineup of games that was compiled...

    Toribash - WiiWare development video

Toribash is quite close to completion. A video has been compiled showing off some animations from the game hopefully convincing viewers what the game is capable of as a WiiWare project. The developers assured me that the game's "blood" can be toggled freely, either with colours or simply with the familiar red depending on what one feels comfortable with. It would've been nice for them to include an option to take it off entirely just in case.

Blog: Will Red Steel 2 sell?

Core gamers have been looking out for games that they will enjoy rather than generic casual tat on the Wii, but so far, they have often been left disappointed. Games such as MadWorld and House of the Dead Overkill released earlier this year were certainly decent enough "hardcore" games, but many have been left thinking that it's all violence and no substance. Although they do have a point, the games were still great fun, but sold much less than they deserved.

    Saturday Favourite: Commodore 64 - 80's advert

"Here is an advert for the Commodore 64 from the 1980's. I think this was recorded in 1984 on betamax"

The first of todays three Saturday favourites

    Friday 1 May 2009

Daily Nintendo Favourite: The Original Human TETRIS Performance

"TETRIS played by real human-beings sitting in an auditorium: TETRIS is the 4th video performance of the GAME OVER Project, directed by the Swiss artist Guillaume REYMOND (NOTsoNOISY creative agency). This stop-motion video was shot and played for "LES URBAINES" festival http://www.urbaines.ch at the Palais de Rumine (Lausanne, Switzerland) on November 24th 2007."

Don't forget that tomorrow it's the weekend, so look out for three favourites throughout the day!
